Nagpur and Nashik Police File FIR Against CSDS’s Sanjay Kumar for Spreading Election Rumours

Nagpur/Nashik – The political climate in Maharashtra heated
up after the Nagpur and Nashik police registered First Information Reports
(FIRs) against Sanjay Kumar, a senior figure associated with the Centre for the
Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). Kumar has been accused of allegedly spreading false rumours
related to elections, creating confusion among the public and political
circles.
According to initial reports, complaints were filed by
citizens and local political groups who claimed that Kumar circulated
misleading claims regarding voter turnout and possible poll outcomes.
Authorities stated that such rumours, particularly during an active election
period, can disturb law and order, influence voter perception, and raise doubts
about the democratic process.
Police officials in both cities confirmed that
investigations are underway. “We have taken cognizance of the matter seriously.
FIRs have been lodged, and statements are being recorded. If required, further
action will follow as per legal procedure,” said a senior officer from Nagpur
Police. Nashik Police echoed similar concerns, highlighting that circulation of
unverified information during elections is a punishable offense under the
Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Representation of the People
Act.
Sanjay Kumar, known for his political analysis and
association with CSDS, has not yet issued an official response. However,
sources close to him suggest that he may challenge the FIRs, citing freedom of
expression.
This development has triggered debates in academic and
political circles over the fine line between critical commentary and
rumour-mongering. While some see the action as a necessary step to
safeguard electoral integrity, others argue it could set a concerning precedent
for academic voices.
The case is expected to move quickly, given the heightened
sensitivity around election-related narratives.
