Demand Raised in Kolhapur: Ambani Should Bring Back Mahadevi Elephant, Protest Intensifies
In a growing wave of public outcry, citizens of Kolhapur
have launched a strong protest demanding the return of Mahadevi, a beloved
elephant reportedly taken to Reliance's Jamnagar facility. The movement, led by
local animal rights groups and cultural activists, is gaining momentum as
people accuse the corporate giant of disrupting the region’s heritage and
emotional ties with the gentle giant.
Mahadevi, who was known for her participation in temple
festivals and her close connection with devotees, was allegedly relocated
without adequate public notice or consent. The incident has sparked emotional
appeals, candle marches, and sit-ins across the city, with many accusing
Reliance Industries and Mukesh Ambani directly for what they call “cultural
theft.”
“The elephant is not just an animal to us. She is a symbol
of our tradition, our rituals, and our community pride,” said Sunita Jadhav, an
organizer of the protest. Activists have also raised concerns about the
well-being of the elephant in her new environment, questioning whether her
needs — both physical and emotional — are being met.
The hashtag #BringBackMahadevi is now trending across
Maharashtra, with thousands sharing old images and videos of the elephant from
temple processions and village fairs. Protesters are urging Ambani to respect
local sentiments and restore Mahadevi to her natural home in Kolhapur.
Officials from Reliance have yet to make a public statement.
Meanwhile, the RD
News Network continues to track the evolving story as local leaders plan to
escalate the matter to the state government if no action is taken soon.
The demand raised in Kolhapur is not merely about an
elephant; it’s a growing movement about identity, respect, and the right to
protect cultural heritage.
