Demand of 80 MPs: Dalai Lama Should Be Awarded Bharat Ratna!
In a rare show of cross-party unity, over 80 Members of
Parliament across India have called for awarding the Bharat Ratna — the
country’s highest civilian honour — to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. This
collective appeal reflects growing recognition of the Dalai Lama's lifelong
commitment to peace, compassion, and spiritual values, not just for Tibetans
but for humanity as a whole.
Born in 1935 in Taktser, Tibet, the Dalai Lama has been a
global symbol of non-violence and harmony. After taking refuge in India in
1959, he established the Tibetan
government-in-exile in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. For over six
decades, he has lived in India and promoted values deeply rooted in Indian
philosophy, including ahimsa (non-violence) and karuna (compassion).
The MPs advocating for this honor argue that the Dalai Lama
has become a global ambassador of India's soft power, especially through his
teachings on Buddhism, interfaith dialogue, and human ethics. Despite receiving
the Nobel Peace Prize and numerous international awards, the Bharat Ratna
remains notably absent from his accolades.
The move is also symbolic — a gesture of India’s
appreciation for the Tibetan spiritual leader’s contribution to Indo-Tibetan
friendship and global peace. It comes at a time when the geopolitical
landscape is shifting, and honoring the Dalai Lama would reaffirm India’s
commitment to democratic values, human rights, and cultural harmony.
The RD News Network will continue to follow this story
closely as public support grows for this historic demand. Will the government
heed the collective voice of its lawmakers and bestow the Bharat Ratna upon one
of the world's most revered spiritual leaders?
